What is scabies?

It is a contagious skin disease that affects all age groups. It is caused by an insect (mite) that cannot be seen with the naked eye, which is more common in crowded places such as schools and kindergartens.


What are the causes of scabies?

Scabies is caused by the transmission of the mite, a tiny parasitic creature that cannot be seen with the naked eye.


How is scabies transmitted?

Scabies is easily transmitted by:
  • Prolonged direct contact with the skin of an infected person (skin-to-skin contact).
  • Indirectly by sharing clothing, towels, bedding, etc., used by an infected person.

What are the symptoms of scabies?

  • Severe itching, especially at night
  • A rash that includes blisters
  • Scratches due to itching
  • Severe red rash, especially on the inside of the wrist or between the fingers or toes
  • Thick scales on the skin

What areas of the body are most susceptible to scabies?

  • Hands and feet (especially between the fingers)
  • Wet parts like the navel and sides
  • Armpits
  • Elbows
  • Inner part of wrists

When should I see a doctor?

You should see a doctor if you notice signs and symptoms that may indicate scabies.


What are the treatments for scabies?

  • The most common treatment for scabies is a topical ointment prescribed by a doctor.
  • Treatment should be given to all contacts of a scabies patient, even if symptoms do not appear.
  • Treatment for scabies is simple and effective and is provided at health centers under Emirates Health Services.

How can I protect my children from scabies?

Ways to prevent scabies:
  • Ensure that the infected person is treated and those who have been in contact with him are examined.
  • Take care of personal hygiene and bathe regularly.
  • Do not share clothes, towels, and personal items with others.
  • Ensure that the infected person's clothes are washed separately from others and that bed sheets and clothes are washed at a high temperature.
  • Avoid crowded places.
  • Keep rooms and surfaces well cleaned using dedicated cleaners.
