What is shingles?

Shingles or herpes zoster is known as a viral infection that affects the skin and causes the appearance of a rash or a group of small, painful blisters.

Which body part does shingles affect?

Shingles may appear in any area of the body, but in most cases, it appears in the form of a belt of rash that wraps around one side of the waist.

Who is at higher risk of developing shingles?

  • People who have had chickenpox previously
  • People above the age of fifty years
  • People with weak immunity

What are the symptoms of shingles?

  • The appearance of blisters
  • Fever
  • Pain
  • Headache
  • Itching
  • Tingling

How to prevent Shingles?

Shingles can be prevented by obtaining the vaccination available at Emirates Health Services facilities for people aged 50 years and above.

How is the Shingles vaccine administered?

The Shingles vaccine is given intramuscularly as a 2-dose series, with the second dose administered 6 months after the first dose.
