Depression

What is depression?

Depression is more than just feeling sad or down for a few days. Depression is not a sign of weakness, and it’s not something you can simply “snap out of” on your own — it goes deeper than that.

Some people think it’s just a normal part of life, but that’s not true. Depression is a real illness with symptoms that must be evaluated by a psychiatrist or mental health professional.


What might I experience if I am depressed?

If you are depressed, you might feel sad, hopeless, and lose interest in things. If these feelings last for several weeks or months, they can affect your social, work, and personal life.

There are also more symptoms that can vary depending on the severity of the depression.

Here are some possible symptoms. You may not experience all of them:
  • Feeling low or in a bad mood for a long time
  • Feeling hopeless and helpless
  • Low self-esteem
  • Feeling like crying – or actually crying
  • Feelings of guilt
  • Lack of motivation and interest in life
  • Loss of interest in things that used to matter
  • Suicidal thoughts or a desire to self-harm

Depending on the severity of the depression, you may also experience physical symptoms:
  • Slowed movement or speech
  • Weight gain or loss
  • Unexplained body aches
  • Muscle tension (often in the shoulders and neck)
  • Low energy
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Changes in sexual desire or menstrual cycle

Why do people get depressed?

It may be due to a distressing or stressful life event, such as illness, divorce, academic difficulties, or relationship problems.

Some factors can increase the risk of depression, such as:
  • Family history of depression
  • Childbirth
  • Medical conditions
  • Alcohol or drug use
  • It may also be due to hormonal imbalances, such as thyroid dysfunction.

How will I be diagnosed with depression?

  • There are no blood tests or scans that can confirm depression.
  • Diagnosis is made through a comprehensive psychological evaluation.
  • Try to be open and honest with your doctor.
  • Be aware that anything you discuss with your psychiatrist is kept confidential.

Is there treatment for depression?

  • Self-help: (e.g., exercise, talking to a trusted friend or family member, participating in different activities, engaging in positive practices)
  • Psychotherapy: (e.g., talking therapy like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy - CBT)
  • Medication: (e.g., antidepressants)

How can I cope with my depression?

  • Exercise regularly
  • Maintain a consistent sleep schedule
  • Eat healthy food, stay hydrated, and walk regularly
  • Surround yourself with trusted and positive people
  • Talk about your feelings and stresses
  • You can also benefit from relaxation exercises

When should I seek help?

  • When the condition becomes overwhelming, and you feel like you’re on the edge
  • When you stop eating
  • When you start having suicidal thoughts
  • When you feel unable to manage your emotions (e.g., consistently low mood, hopelessness, helplessness)
