06 May 2024

Al Amal Psychiatric Hospital, a leading medical facility under Emirates Health Services (EHS), organized "Autism Talks" in collaboration with Emirates Autism Society. The event sought to raise community awareness, offer support to individuals with autism, and bolster societal contributions to improving the quality of life for those with autism.

The event witnessed the participation of a select group of speakers, including the Executive Director of the Ajman Government Media Office, and Emirates Autism Society board member, Mohammed Al Kaabi, as well as radio presenter Hassan Ahmed, a prominent advocate for changing the negative perception of autism.

"Autism Talks" also featured the participation of Maryam Ali Alhammadi, a member in Emirates Autism Society and active advocate in various autism awareness events and programs; Asmaa Baqer, the versatile Emirati artist; Latifa Alshamsi, a social media influencer; Dr. Hayat Taresh AlAlili, one of EHS’ cadre; and the global exceptional Emirati artist Abdullah Lutfi. The event was presented by the talented autistic Ali Saif Bin Sumaidaa.

During her opening remarks, Dr. Noor Al Mheiri, Director of the Mental Health Department at EHS, emphasized the significance of this event in highlighting the challenges faced by people of determination in society. She stressed that offering support and guidance to these individuals is a primary focus for EHS, explaining that autism poses significant health and social challenges for communities. Insufficient societal awareness may lead to the isolation of individuals with autism and diminish their opportunities for social and occupational engagement.

She highlighted the vital importance of seeking innovative solutions for treating autism spectrum disorder and alleviating its impacts. These solutions should encompass providing essential support for individuals with autism and their families. Additionally, offering educational and training programs to enhance their communication and social interaction skills is crucial. Supporting scientific research to better understand the causes and mechanisms of autism spectrum disorder and developing effective, innovative therapies to enhance their quality of life and integration into society are key aspects said Dr. Noor Al Mheiri.

H.E. Majid Sultan Al Muhairi, Chairman of the Board of Emirates Autism Society, praised the collaboration with Emirates Health Services, notably Al Amal Psychiatric Hospital. He remarked, "The 'Autism Talks' initiative signifies a pivotal step in our mission to enhance awareness about autism spectrum disorder within society and foster the growth of an inclusive and accepting community. This initiative was introduced in alignment with Autism Awareness Month."

H.E. Al Muhairi elaborated, "The initiative featured a captivating art exhibition showcasing the creative talents of individuals with autism, alongside discussions highlighting stories of resilience and hope shared by them and their families. Initiatives like these exemplify the positive synergy between supporting individuals with autism and their families, fostering values of tolerance and understanding in the Emirati society." He highlighted the significance of unified efforts and effective collaboration in embracing and empowering individuals with autism, contributing to creating an inclusive and supportive environment that aids in their capacity building and societal integration."

Dr. Ammar Humaid Albanna, Director of Al Amal Psychiatric Hospital, emphasized the crucial role of conveying the voices of individuals with autism and their families. He added that sharing stories and experiences in "Autism Talks" instills hope in the community, particularly among newly diagnosed families that might have fears at the beginning of the journey, emphasizing the importance of supporting people of determination.

Emirates Health Services, overseeing this event as part of a series of similar initiatives, is committed to diversifying its approaches at the research, awareness, and practical levels. The aim is to support, assist, empower people of determination, and facilitate their integration into society.
