In a remarkable medical achievement, Al Qassimi Hospital in Sharjah, part of the Emirates Health Services, successfully saved the life of a patient suffering from severe pneumonia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. This was accomplished using an advanced technique involving an oesophageal catheter for measuring pulmonary pressure, resulting in significant improvements in her condition and her subsequent discharge from the intensive care unit in good health.

Upon arrival at the emergency department, the patient was in critical condition, with dangerously low blood oxygen levels due to respiratory failure. She was immediately transferred to intensive care and placed on a ventilator. After five days of intensive treatment without significant improvement, the medical team decided to employ this innovative technology, which allows for precise pulmonary pressure measurement and facilitates safe adjustments to ventilator settings.

Dr. Arif Al Nooryani, CEO of Al Qassimi Hospital in Sharjah commended this success, stating, "This achievement reflects our unwavering commitment to delivering world-class healthcare, supported by the Emirates Health Services. We invest in cutting-edge technologies and train our medical teams to utilize them effectively. We aim to expand this successful approach, thereby enhancing the UAE's status as a leading center for advanced medical innovation, in alignment with the 'We the UAE 2031’ vision and the UAE Centennial 2071."

Dr. Amro Abu Al-Ala, a consultant in intensive care at Al Qassimi Hospital and the attending physician for this case, added, "The use of pulmonary pressure measurement technology for the first time in the UAE marks a pivotal moment in the management of critical cases. This technique has greatly improved diagnostic and treatment accuracy, allowing us to effectively address the complexities of this patient's condition and ultimately save her life."

Thanks to this innovative approach, the patient exhibited gradual signs of improvement and was able to leave the intensive care unit in good health. This accomplishment not only showcases the advanced medical expertise at Al Qassimi Hospital but also solidifies its position as a leader in adopting the latest medical technologies. Furthermore, it also contributes to enhancing the hospital’s position as a medical center of excellence in providing high-quality specialized care and highlights the essential role of the Emirates Health Services in fostering medical innovation throughout the country.
