Emirates Health Services becomes world’s 1st health authority to earn Joint Commission International’s Enterprises Accreditation

19 October 2022

The UAE maintains its lead in delivering quality in the health sector, earning a series of accreditations that allowed the Emirates to rank first internationally in the field, the latest of which being the Enterprises Accreditation granted by the Joint Commission International (JCI) to Emirates Health Services, making EHS the first health authority in the world to earn this certification.

With this accreditation, EHS has strengthened its international status as a renowned leader in the healthcare sector, underlining its management’s successful efforts to meet all the criteria and requirements for obtaining the accreditation, which was granted to EHS after an international panel of judges raised their report following a thorough assessment of the institution’s performance.

The report included an assessment of all central departments and healthcare facilities at EHS, which included 17 hospitals, as well as Ras Al Khaimah’s Network of Primary Healthcare Centres, consisting of 18 facilities, and finally, the 21 Sharjah Primary Healthcare Centres.

EHS’ various departments and healthcare facilities were able to implement all international standards and requirements needed for the accreditation programme, which include meeting quality standards for administrative and health services. This, in turn, allows the UAE to maintain its pioneering role in implementing quality standards in the health sector, and its success in obtaining accreditation certificates to cement its status as first in the world in this field.

Enterprises Accreditation is the first international accreditation programme of its kind at the JCI. Global standards for this accreditation were completed and published for implementation across relevant institutions in April 2022; they include the main tasks health systems undertake that enhance performance at healthcare facilities, in line with standards of governance, human resources, interconnected health and digital systems, quality standards, and patient safety.

Upon closer inspection of the services EHS provided, evaluators expressed their admiration for the advanced and globally competitive level Emirates Health Services has achieved in implementing these standards and maintaining high levels of performance and efficiency.

“This accomplishment is an international recognition of the UAE’s advanced international position,” asserted His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Salim Al Olama, Head of Board of Directors at EHS. “It enhances our competitive advantage and international leadership in the health sector, and aligns with the vision of our wise leadership, which guides the country’s efforts to plan proactively, shape the future of the healthcare industry, cement the UAE’s prominent position in the future agenda, and boost the country’s competitiveness in the health sector.”

“Under the wise leadership of UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, Ruler of Dubai, this new accomplishment reaffirms our vision at Emirates Health Services to maintain leadership in providing health services, as well as integrated, effective, innovative, and high-quality treatment, that are in line with the UAE’s vision and with international standards,” H.E. Al Olama added.

“This achievement reinforces EHS’ values that prioritise patients, and include excellence, leadership, initiative, productivity, accountability, respect, innovation, teamwork, and the happiness of the community,” H.E. continued. “It strives to ensure the happiness of the community, fulfil the objectives of the UAE Vision National Agenda, and make the UAE the world’s leading healthcare destination by its Centennial in 2071.”

For his part, H.E. Dr. Yousif Mohammed Al-Serkal, Director-General of Emirates Health Services, applauded EHS’ strategy to consistently provide best-in-class healthcare services that meet the highest international standards, expressing his pride in the EHS leadership, medical, and technical staff, and congratulating all employees for earning the new accreditation, which will contribute to improving service quality and patient safety, in addition to promoting happiness among patients and customers.

Emirates Health Services is one of the most prominent health authorities, having been the first entity of its kind to earn certain accreditations and standards. EHS strives to preserve these achievements by enhancing sustainability, work efficiency, and performance across all of its departments and facilities.
