Emirates Health Services’ Kuwait Hospital Sharjah opens a Diabetes and Endocrine Clinic

17 July 2023

Emirates Health Services’ (EHS) Kuwait Hospital Sharjah opened a Diabetes and Endocrine Clinic to serve Sharjah and its surrounding areas. This reinforces EHS being the leading entity in the field of providing the highest international standards of medical services as well as Kuwait Hospital Sharjah’s efforts to provide various medical and treatment specialties and introduce more health services.

Afra Salim, Director of Kuwait Hospital Sharjah, said the opening of the Diabetes and Endocrine Clinic constitutes a qualitative addition to the medical and therapeutic services at Kuwait Hospital Sharjah, by providing high-level healthcare for diabetics and endocrine patients in Sharjah and the surrounding areas, with the clinic receiving patients twice a week.

She added that diabetes is one of the most serious challenges facing communities and health institutions, also emphasizing that EHS places great importance on combating diabetes and improving the level of health services provided to diabetic and endocrine patients.

Endocrinology and diabetes specialist, Dr. Amr Hazem of Kuwait Hospital Sharjah, said the clinic will attend to patients twice a week for type 1 and type 2 diabetes care, including challenging cases. The clinic also diagnoses and treats hormonal disorders, thyroid diseases, reproductive endocrine diseases, pituitary gland disorders, and adrenal gland abnormalities in addition to providing hormonal replacement therapy.

Diabetes refers to a group of diseases that affect how the body consumes blood sugar (glucose). Glucose is an important source of energy for the cells that make up muscles and tissues. It is also the main source of energy for the brain. Although the main cause of diabetes varies depending on its type, it leads to an increase in blood sugar levels, which may lead to serious health problems.

Cases of chronic diabetes include types 1 and 2, treatable cases of diabetes, prediabetes, and gestational diabetes. Prediabetes occurs when blood sugar levels increase above the normal range, but the levels aren’t high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. Prediabetes can also lead to diabetes unless the necessary steps are taken to prevent it.

Type 1 and type 2 diabetes are accompanied by many symptoms, including feeling thirstier than usual, frequent urination, unintentional weight loss, and the presence of ketones in the urine. Ketones are a byproduct of the breakdown of muscle and fat that occurs when there is not enough insulin in the body. Associated symptoms include feeling tired and weak, mood swings, blurry vision, slow healing of sores, and many gum, skin, and vaginal infections.
