Arab Board for Health Specialisations Accredits Anaesthesia Department at Kuwait Hospital in Sharjah to Receive the Arab Board

17 May 2022

Dubai, UAE - April 24, 2022 – The Arab Board for Health Specialisations (ABHS) – the body entrusted with developing health services by training highly qualified health sector experts – has accredited the Anaesthesia Department at Kuwait Hospital and Al Qassimi Hospital in Sharjah, which are part of Emirates Health Services (EHS), in order to receive the Arab Board under the supervision of the Training and Development Centre.

EHS aims to strengthen the health system by providing medical education programmes that meet the highest quality standards in order to strengthen the healthcare workforce in the UAE and populate it with highly skilled and qualified doctors. EHS is working to secure accreditation for its health facilities as educational facilities from the National Institute for Health Specialties, and to ensure the provision of medical training and education in line with local and international standards.

Dr. Issa Al-Moalimi, Assistant Director of Kuwait Hospital for Medical and Technical Affairs, asserted: “The Arab Board for Health Specialisations has accredited the Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care as a recognised centre to receive the Arab Board. This is a significant addition to Kuwait Hospital’s track record and the fruit of concerted efforts from Emirates Health Services, which has set systematic plans to supply the health sector with distinguished medical competencies through world-class educational and training programmes.”

“EHS implements a series of training programmes that allow doctors to specialise, all while ensuring quality and adhering to international best practices in healthcare,” Dr. Al-Moalimi added. “The Anaesthesia Department at Kuwait Hospital in Sharjah trains a group of doctors every year to obtain the Arab Board in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, in an effort to supply the health sector with distinguished medical professionals and provide outstanding healthcare.”

For his part, Dr. Bassam Hammad, Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Consultant at Kuwait Hospital, explained that the training programme could last up to four years for those looking to obtain a certificate as an Anaesthesiologist and Intensive Care Specialist. “Three doctors joined the training programme in October 2020, while the second batch – launched last year in 2021 – welcomed four doctors,” Dr. Hammad.

“The programme was launched under the supervision of four expert consultants in anaesthesia and intensive care at Kuwait Hospital, and included training on all types of local and general anaesthesia for all kinds of operation, including general, orthopaedic, brain, neuro, and open-heart surgeries,” Dr. Hammad continued. “The programme also includes theory lectures, workshops, and clinical training for 40 to 48 hours per week.”

Kuwait Hospital is committed to enhancing this kind of training programmes, where this particular course is supervised by a consultant in anaesthesia and intensive care in scientific research. The Hospital organises a “scientific day” every week to talk about difficult cases, exchange experiences, and train doctors on anaesthesia for all types of cases, in an effort to expand their medical knowledge, and allow them to learn skills that enable them to contribute more effectively and continue to advance their medical career.

The Arab Board for Health Specialisations is a professional scientific body established by the Council of Arab Ministers for Health under the umbrella of the Arab League, with the aim of training health service providers and enhancing their knowledge and expertise through continuous professional development programmes, in line with the rapid developments in digital communication and its uses in education, training, and professional development. The objective is to drive cooperation and integration between the Council and similar local bodies in the field of healthcare training, as well as to enhance collaboration with international health bodies.
