Doctors at Al Fujairah Hospital Successfully Perform Complex Brain Surgery

A team of doctors at Al Fujairah Hospital successfully saved the life of a 5-week-old girl, weighing only 1,400 grams, by performing a precise and complex brain surgery.

The baby, who was born in the 27th week of gestation, suffered from multiple complications related to prematurity, which were successfully managed in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Al Fujairah Hospital. However, the lack of immunity, infection resistance, that typically occurs in preterm babies led to an infection in her chest, blood, and brain.

By monitoring the child's condition, brain MRI imaging revealed the presence of pus in the brain threatening the life of the girl. The only treatment option was to undergo brain surgery to remove the pus.

The team of doctors at Al Fujairah Hospital, led by Dr. Moni Vinod, decided to perform the surgical procedure by creating an opening in the skull and removing the accumulated pus in the brain. The operation was successful and the girl was subsequently monitored by a team of experienced pediatric doctors in the neonatal intensive care unit.

Ahmed Al Khadeim, Director of Al Fujairah Hospital, said, "Although performing this type of surgery is considered extremely risky, especially since the patient was a newborn baby barely 5 weeks old, the speed of response, decision-making, and the doctors’ expertise, along with the readiness in terms of equipment and facilities in the operating room and the neonatal intensive care unit, led to the success of the operation and saving the child's life."

He also praised the efforts of all the doctors working in the hospital and emphasized that Al Fujairah Hospital is now considered one of the distinguished medical facilities in the country, providing the highest standards of healthcare and medical treatments, which has enhanced the confidence of patients.

Performing precise and complex brain surgery on newborn babies is a challenge, given the risks of anesthesia, potential complications, and postoperative outcomes. However, the efficiency of the medical team, their extensive experience, and the readiness of Al Fujairah Hospital - all contributed to the success of the surgery and in saving the child's life.
